Intent

Implementation

At Worlingham CEVC Primary School, our PE curriculum is led and overseen by the PE Leads, whose intentions are to enable all children to excel and develop in Physical Education and reach their full potential, but also to support the teaching staff to deliver effective Physical Education teaching, and help foster an enjoyment and confidence for the PE curriculum. We believe that it is key for the children to be actively involved in developing their own healthy, active lifestyles, both whilst they are with us in school, and when they leave our school setting. Our teaching of this is embedded into our PE, Science and PSHE curriculums, where the children will learn about healthy eating and nutrition, balanced diets, and the importance of exercise and movement for the body.

Throughout the year, the PE Leads conduct pupil perception questionnaires with children from EYFS all the way up to Year 6. We are passionate about gathering pupil voice, as this assessment and gathering of suggestions are then acted upon, where possible, to help children to really development enjoyment for Physical Education and value it both during their time in school and beyond.

To achieve the National Curriculum goals, we follow the Get Set 4 PE scheme from Early Years to Year 6, which enables consistency and gradually progression to be achieved. Get Set 4 PE ensures both EYFS Statutory Framework and National Curriculum coverage, which is integrated into their detailed lesson plans. Through using the Get Set 4 PE scheme, we are able to deliver a wide range of activities and sports for the children to develop their skills in, including:

  • Dance;
  • Gymnastics;
  • Invasion Games;
  • Athletics;
  • Net and Wall Games;
  • Striking and Fielding;
  • Target Games;
  • Outdoor Adventurous Activity;
  • Fundamentals;
  • Ball Skills.

Each lesson plan has a clear Learning Intention for the children, as well as success criteria for achieving this and key vocabulary that the children are expected to know. We are passionate about teaching vocabulary at Worlingham CEVC Primary School, and this vocabulary is displayed on the walls and displays where the children’s PE lessons take place, as relevant. The PE curriculum and scheme of work is assessed and discussed with teaching staff regularly, where adaptations and improvements can then be made to support both the children and the teaching staff.

At Worlingham CEVC Primary School, we aim to deliver three lessons of PE each fortnight, covering three units each term. In addition to their PE lessons, the children are physically active daily through engaging with activities such as Just Dance and Super Movers in the classroom, which has links with the children’s English, SPAG and Mathematics learning, and Daily Mile inspired runs, where the children can work towards improving their own individual performances within a time limit.

In addition, all children in Key Stage 2 attend a block of school swimming lessons at Bungay Swimming pool. In line with the National Curriculum, is it our aim that all children will be able to swim 25m by the time they leave school in Year 6. The swimming lessons are taught by qualified swimming coaches, who continuously assess the children’s abilities and challenge them to make improvements to achieve their full potential. The children are taught a range of stroke techniques and self-rescue techniques, and appropriate equipment and flotation devices support the children to feel safe whilst also developing their confidence and competence.

The children are assessed against the End of Unit Outcomes, which are based upon the Get Set 4 PE scheme, which ensures coverage of the EYFS Statutory Framework and National Curriculum aims. Teachers are aware of children not meeting expectations, and the PE Lead can help to support progress in areas of difficulty.

In Early Years, gross motor skills are developed through providing opportunities for play and sensory exploration with both objects and their peers in both indoor and outdoor settings. During the children’s discrete PE lessons, the children will follow the detailed lesson plans of Get Set 4 PE, where the children will develop their skills in the Fundamentals, Ball Skills and Games, as well as Dance and Gymnastics.

At Worlingham CEVC Primary School, all children receive their PE lessons across a range of both indoor and outdoor settings. These include:

  • Our large Sports Hall, which has a climbing wall and large gymnastics frame;
  • Our dining hall, where the children have access to video and audio resources to support with Dance and Gymnastics work in particular;
  • Two large field spaces, where in the warmer months an Athletics track and football pitch are mapped out for use;
  • Our playground, which includes Basketball nets.

Inclusivity is incredibly important to us at Worlingham CEVC Primary, and we strongly believe that every child should have access to an exciting and diverse curriculum, where they can strive to improve their abilities, whatever the barrier a child may face. We are fortunate to have a wide range of equipment and resources for use in PE lessons, including different sized balls and rackets, as well as sensory-focused equipment providing touch and sound outputs. For many children on EHCP or support plans in school, we also offer additional physical activities such as sensory circuits from EYFS to Year 6, and lunchtime small-group play sessions for Key Stage 1 children.

Each year, our Year 6 children are given the exciting opportunity to become Sports Leaders for the school. This role involves the children supporting with annual events within school, such as Sports Day, as well as helping to run and score inter-school competitions within the community. We are also looking to extend the role of our Sports Leaders to allow opportunities for children across the school to engage with activities and sports at lunchtimes, enabling more children to be physically active for more sustained periods of time. We feel having children taking on the responsibilities of a Sports Leader is fantastic for supporting them to become confident leaders, develop their skills as coaches to support others to make improvements, and help to develop the key aim of all children understanding and leading a healthy, active lifestyle.

In addition to providing a high-quality education in school, Worlingham CEVC Primary School is also a part of the Suffolk School Games community. We are passionate about children being able to both develop their competence as well as challenge themselves to apply their skills across sporting contexts outside of school, and each year, we participate in a wide range of both cooperative and competitive events across the local catchment area. We also participate in inclusive inter-school events through the School Games Panathlon, such as swimming, Boccia and Bowling. We aim for all pupil premium and SEND children to participate in at least one inter-school event each year, and this is something we have achieved for the past two years.

Ultimately, at Worlingham, we aim for children to develop the necessary knowledge and skills which will have a positive impact on their future by becoming physically active citizens to benefit their long-term health and well-being. We continuously check and adapt our resources and equipment, gather feedback from staff and children and are always actively looking for new ways to enhance our teaching of Physical Education in school.
