Intent
At Worlingham CEVC Primary School, all children will receive a high-quality, engaging yet challenging computing education, that will enable the children to thrive in the digital World. We are passionate in educating our pupils on how to use technology responsibly, positively and most importantly safely.
In line with the National Curriculum, our computing curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:
- can understand and apply fundamental principles and concepts of computer science.
- can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs to solve these problems.
- can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies analytically to solve problems.
- are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
Through our Early Years provision, we recognise the importance of our children developing an understanding of the technologically diverse World in which they live in.
We recognise computing offers the children opportunities to share learning in creative ways beyond pen and paper. By the end of year 6, we aim for our children to become digitally literate. This will enable the children to use and develop their ideas through technology and have the skills to continue to be active participants in the constantly changing digital world, beyond the classroom.
Implementation
At Worlingham CEVC Primary School the computing curriculum is led and overseen by the Computing Leads, whose intentions are to inspire both the pupils and staff to develop an enjoyment for computing and the digital world. The Computing Leads regularly support to build staff confidence through training and staff meetings. All teachers have access to the end of unit outcomes and vocabulary, as well as detailed lesson plans and resources. Our computing curriculum is regularly discussed and evaluated with the teaching staff and enhancements and adaptions are made as necessary to support both children and teachers.
To achieve the National Curriculum goals, we follow the ‘Teach Computing’ scheme created by National Centre for Computing Education. This scheme enables the children to develop their skills in areas such as computer science, programming, creating media and audio and exploring data and information. Over a two-week period, we aim for all children across KS1 and KS2 to receive a minimum of one-hour structured computing teaching. In addition, the children develop their technological skills through other weekly activities such as Times Tables Rockstars, linking also to our maths curriculum.
Furthermore, individual children receive targeted support through the use of chromebooks and computers, to participate within activities such as Nessy and Dynamo maths in line with their SEND support plans.
Children in Early Years are provided with early opportunities to explore algorithms through ordering, and access word reading and mathematics through a screen, enabling them to explore and play with a wider range of media.
Online and internet safety is strongly integrated within the Teach Computing curriculum. Alongside this, we will be integrating Project Evolve into our teaching across the whole school to focus more specifically on Privacy and Security, as this will emphasis the importance of staying safe online as a consistent message. We recognise and celebrate events such as Internet Safer Day.
At the beginning of each academic year, the Year 6 children are given the opportunity to apply to become a digital leader for the school. These children support with the running of collective worship to further enable them to become more confident and competent outside of the classroom environment.
At Worlingham CEVC Primary School we are passionate about creating effective cross-curricular links with both core and foundation subjects, and this is something we want to develop more. This has already been demonstrated within LKS2 with creating an audio narrative to compliment the children’s persuasive poster adverts of chocolate. Across the school, all children use the internet to access and analyse information to research relevant topics to enhance their learning.
Impact
At Worlingham CEVC Primary School we expect that the children will leave primary school equipped with a range of skills that will enable them to flourish in the diverse digital world. Teachers have consistent high expectations so that the children will be both supported and challenged where appropriate, enabling the best progress with their computing skills. Children will have a good understanding of a range of computing vocabulary as outlined in the Teach Computing scheme.
The children’s progress is assessed against the end of unit outcomes documentation, as created in line with the Teach Computing scheme and National Curriculum. Quality evidence is recorded and collated in each class through the use of a physical folder which includes the children’s independent work, as well as ideas from group discussions and screenshots from the children’s computer screens.
In pupil perceptions, children commented that they would ask a trusted adult if something came up they were unsure of. The children shared how computing could be applied outside of school and in later life such as within business, searching the internet, viewing media and creating their own products. Children also comment on the enjoyment for using both Chromebooks and computers for different reasons and comment on the cross-curricular links in English and maths in particular being a positive.
At Worlingham CEVC Primary School, we support the children to view the digital world as being a key part of their development. It is important that the children know they will have to make choices as a digital citizen and that we have equipped them with the knowledge to make positive and safe choices.
