Intent

Art and Design offers the opportunity to stimulate children’s creativity and imagination by providing visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world.

Through developing their knowledge of the elements of pattern, texture, colour, line, tone, shape, form and space, and the skills to use materials and techniques in both two and three dimensional work, the children are able to communicate ideas, feelings and meanings.

They are also able to explore the ideas and meanings in the work of different artists, crafts people and designers and begin to understand the functions of art, craft and design in their own lives and for different times and cultures.

Implementation

Art lessons are taught by class teachers and a highly skilled Art HLTA. Each lesson involves time to reflect on previous learning and recap any key vocabulary. Within lessons, new skills are modelled, new vocabulary is discussed and definitions are introduced and displayed. Staff are assessing new skills, knowledge and understanding regularly throughout each lesson. Children regularly reflect on their own work and take part in regular peer and self-assessment during and at the end of units. Teachers assess children against key ‘I can’ statements for each unit.

Our school has a fully resourced Discovery room which enables the children to freely express themselves in a creative environment. We have a whole school Art Gallery, where children from each class have their art work celebrated and displayed. We also have a wide range of display spaces throughout the school for us to celebrate children’s work. Children are taught how to safely use and look after resources in school.

Impact

Children develop their artistic skills and understanding within the topics of Painting, Sculpture, Collage, Drawing, Print and Textiles. The children are introduced to a range of styles and famous artists from a selection of cultures and historical periods. Children are beginning to use and understand the newly introduced art vocabulary.
